  • Edited tape, only some brief Peel links remain.
  • In a guest column by 5Live presenter Clare McDonnell, she mentions her love of listening to Peel in the early 80s. ("Thanks, John Peel", Radio Times 12-18 February 2022, p. 113). "And he really understood his audience. I remember one night when I'd finished watching David Bowie turn in a stellar performance in the 1982 TV dramatisation of Bertolt Brecht's Baal, I ran upstairs to my bedroom feeling somewhat disloyal that I had missed the start of John Peel's show. His first words after I hit the on button were: 'Ah, finally decided to show up, have you, now that Bowie's off the telly?' "It felt like he was actually in the room with me. How did he know? He knew because he'd done what I now know all great radio presenters do; they make it first and foremost about their audience, not themselves." There was only one broadcast of Baal (a great production by Alan Clarke which made the front cover of RT, funnily enough) on 2 March 1982. (Thanks to IanG for the info)
