John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

  • Audio contains the radio broadcast of four of Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera's session tracks.
  • The show was presented by John Peel and Tommy Vance.
  • A possible preview chat of the show between JP, TV and Kenny Everett on the latter's show has been discovered on the "Missing Believed Wiped" Facebook page.
  • The audio is definitely from this date, as according to Ken Garner's Peel Sessions book, the repeated session of Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera had an extra track called Long Nights Of Summer, which is played here.
  • The audio is not great quality, recorded from an old gramophone radio using a cassette recorder and external microphone.
  • A session by the UK pop-psychedelic band Kaleidoscope, not to be confused with the better-known US band of the same name, although both bands had little success in their time and in later decades became favourites with collectors of late 1960s music. The British Kaleidoscope released an LP called Tangerine Dream in late 1967, several years before the German band of that name emerged. They later evolved into Fairfield Parlour, who were managed by Peel's Radio 1 colleague David Symonds
  • Playlist also includes a track by Enchanted Forest, an early all-female band[1] who at one point were backing group for Tiny Tim, and one by Ferre Grignard. a skiffle/protest singer from Belgium[2].
