John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

  • Available recordings focus on the session tracks. The Yardbirds's "Dazed And Confused" later became famous in Led Zeppelin's version. The acoustic instrumental "White Summer" is a feature for the guitar of Jimmy Page, who based it on one of Davy Graham's most famous tracks, his pioneering, Eastern-influenced arrangement of "She Moves Through The Fair"[1], first recorded in 1962.
  • A New Generation (more on them here) are one of the more obscure of the many bands to have recorded a Top Gear session in 1968. They made little impression at the time, but a few years later two members of the band, Iain and Gavin Sutherland, achieved chart success, Top Of The Pops exposure and Peel airplay as the Sutherland Brothers, and later as the Sutherland Brothers And Quiver.

(JP: 'I Saw You At Skippy Fair, those are the New Generation. Incidentally word has come up to Peel House in exotic groovy Fulham, that some people at the university of Aston in Birmingham actually knitted a communal sweater for 80 people. It's probably an offence for more than 10...) 2
(JP: 'A New Generation and that was called A Brush With Sister Jo') 2
(JP: 'I think that you agree that was a worthy version of Eleanor Rigby...') 2

Other
  • 1,3,4,5,7,8) Thanks to ColinH. File 3 may well be from this show as the sound quality is similar to the other two files. File 1b, 3b have been centred. File 5 is from the same source but longer as the earlier version was cut early due to a long dropout. This has now been compensated for, as well as centred.
  • 2) Many thanks to the Songsider website
  • 6) Many thanks to Chloe Costello. The audio starts and ends at exactly the same point as File 3 so indicating that it is from the same original source tape
