Peel plays a track from Genesis, not the British prog rock band (whose career was only just starting, under the guidance of Jonathan King), but a short-lived American psychedelic rock group of that name from the West Coast.
Says he hopes his listeners saw Joni Mitchell on BBC2 TV last night – he didn’t, because his mother’s TV doesn’t have BBC2.
Peel mentions cycling last night to the Roundhouse in London, where he saw the Deviants and Led Zeppelin perform. It was one of Zeppelin's earliest UK gigs[1] and he says they'll appear on Top Gear soon. He also heard some tracks from the new Beatles LP there.
Peel mentions seeing Leonard Cohen in Portobello Road yesterday, "which is the reason why the knees of my trousers are dirty". Says he went there with his brother and saw Stevie Winwood at the "nice" (untrendy) end of that road.
He plays the B-side of Fleetwood Mac's single "Albatross". "Jigsaw Puzzle Blues", a tune originally recorded by Joe Venuti's Blue Five in 1933. He says he's listened several times to the A-side, but seems unsure whether he likes it.
Love Sculpture's "Sabre Dance" is due to be released on 22 November as a single after public demand from listeners who heard the band's session version. Peel dedicates it to people with whom he "shared a floor in Nottingham last week" after his gig there.
Joni Mitchell: Cactus Tree (session) (JP likes this song a lot and plays it "specially for Trader Horne, sitting up there in Liverpool…")
File 1 ends with JP saying his remarks about the pygmy mice in Regent's Park Zoo provoked lots of mail from listeners. File 2 continues below, with more on pygmy mice
(JP: 'Here are Tyrannosaurus Rex, and this is their last number, and this is also going on their 3rd LP. And they will be back on Top Gear, I promise you. This is called The Evenings Of Damask)
