John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

  • Appears to be the first play of Killing Joke, and Peel features all three tracks from their debut release. Says he thought the record was so good he called up to check they were a genuine band and not someone famous. Also booked them for a first session. Announces ‘Nervous System’ as ‘Turn To Red’ and is phoned by an unnamed band member to correct him. Peel claims the label is confusing.
  • Two of the Flys are in the studio with Peel. The Martha & The Muffins track is played for their mothers.
  • Plays the final three tracks from the Avon Calling compilation, as well as four from Earcom 2, including two from Joy Division, plus the new Joy Division single.
  • Show is now complete with the Derby Box share now including the intro and full first track by Killing Joke

Sessions[]

Tracklisting[]

  • File 2 begins at start of show
  • File 1 cuts in 3 minutes into first track
(JP: "Good evening to you. Tonight, a thoroughly splendid session from Stiff Little Fingers repeated and produced by Bob Sargeant and those of you who missed it the first time around missed a treat and those of you who heard it the first time around will be jolly pleased to hear it again in my estimation. We have four titles from Earcom 2 including two by Joy Division which were recorded around the same time as their LP and also a new Joy Division single to be issued sometime in this month I think. You got a new record by Marianne Faithful of all people, three more from Avon Calling also records by the Damned, Pink Military, Merton Parkas, Purple Hipsters, Martha and the Muffins, The Specials, Transmitters and others besides and I'm always going on how almost every day we get a record by somebody we've never heard of before which is really very very good and tonight's is rather startling it's by Killing Joke.")
(JP: "Well, this morning when I listened to that I thought it was so good that I really in a sense suspected there was you know there was a bit of a trick in it that it was somebody famous masquerading uh you know under a different name so I phoned up a phone number that was included with the record and found out that it is indeed a real band and we're going to have a session from them as soon as we possibly can. They're called Killing Joke and that's on their own Malicious Damage label uh it's a 10-inch maxi single in fact it's called Are You Receiving that track is and I shall play you more from it later in the programme. The first from Stiff Little Fingers is Wait and See.")
(JP: "Stiff Little Fingers the session produced by Bob Sargent and that's called Wait and See. The band touring of course at the moment. Tomorrow they're in Portsmouth the following day it's Cambridge then onto Leicester on the 13th Cardiff on the 14th Manchester on the 16th Brighton on the 17th on the 18th it's Coventry. The 19th Durham. The 20th Troon and on the 21st it's Aberdeen. Police car. Police car.")
(JP: "Well not as good as the version they did for the programme I think but very fine nevertheless those are the Damned and that's Burglar on the B side of the new single. Here's A Message To You Rudy. Hold on.")
(JP: "Must be said that that grows on you in fact those are the Specials the new single on Two Tone of course and it's A Message To You Rudy. New single from Joy Division is going to be issued at the end of October and if you watch the TV programme Something Else you'll have seen them do the song it's called Transmission.")
(JP: "And that'll be a single shortly Joy Division and it's called Transmission. Two more from the band later on in the programme taken from the Earcom 2 LP EP whatever it is after Transmission. The Transmitters.")
(JP: "I'll probably still be doing radio programmes. Those are the Transmitters on Step Forward and that's called The Ugly Man this next one is for uh Esther and Merid who are mothers to two of the Flys who are in the studio with me this evening and it seems like an appropriate title. Insect Love in fact on Dindisc by Martha and the Muffins hope they're listening I'll shall be cross if they're not.")
(JP: 'There's a strange little piece for you that's Martha and the Muffins forthcoming single on Dindisk the people who brought you the Revillos and uh Orchestral Manoeuvres as well and that's called Insect Love. These are the Purple Hipsters who are stranger yet I would say and their first record which is on Black Griffin records it's called hold on it's called Howzyasistah.")
  • Purple Hipsters: Howzyasistah (single) Black Griffin
(JP: 'Don't see that it's any of your business anyway. I haven't got a sister. Those are the Purple Hipsters on Black Griffin records and it's called Howzyasistah as I've already said now I think three times and they curiously enough are appearing in London tomorrow in Southwest 11 at the uh 101 club which is St John's Hill Southwest 11 along with The Reluctant Stereotypes and they have a single on Oval called The Lull.')
(JP: 'And that's the Reluctant Stereotypes and The Lull and we were trying to figure out exactly where the band came from you see and the Flys being from Coventry themselves said that they reckon they came from Coventry and the handout that came with the record just says from the Midlands rather vaguely but I noticed that Porky who makes it a Prime Cut has cut into the vinyl the words uh postmarked Coventry and he knows better than anybody else I'm sure. These are The Merton Parkas and the title track from their LP Face In the Crowd.')
(JP: 'Well, I know there are even entire organizations whose job it is to hate the Merton Parkas but I don't know why people slag them off so much I mean it's quite a nice album I think that's the title track from it and it's facing the cloud no crowd uh Stiff Little Fingers and uh this is At The Edge)
(JP: 'Very good stuff. Stiff Little Fingers and that's called At The Edge. Now another track from that Killing Joke Maxi single cuz I decided because I couldn't find one of the records I was supposed to be playing so I decided I'd play all three of the tracks on the Maxi single it is a maxi single yes it is uh and this one's called Turn To Red very good band indeed I think.')
(JP:' Oh. Where are we? I've lost me place entirely. That's Killing Joke from their record the Maxi single and I'll play the third track from it a little later on. That's called Turn To Red and I got a letter a week or so ago from somebody I think the name is Tedmus Max Slithers. At least that's the name that was on the letter Tedmus or Tedris from Brixton saying could I play How Long Will It Take by Pat Kelly hoping I think that I hadn't got it. No hoping I think that I hadn't got it well I have this is it.')
(JP: "Well Tedmas or Tedris in Brixton I hope you're listening to that that's Pat Kelly from 1969 on Gas Records - How Long Will It Take. The three final tracks coming up now from the LP Avon Calling worked our way through the whole thing and as I say not a bad track on it so far and these three are good as well the albums on Heartbeat the first of the three bands are called Vice Squad.")
(JP: "Well now, I've played you all of the tracks from the LP Avon Calling but I shan't be leaving it there because I should be picking others out to play again because it's a very good album I think most impressive uh bands of course from the Bristol area three there the first of them was Vice Squad with Nothing then Stereo Models with Move Fast Stay Ahead and the third of them Double Vision with the pretty title My Dead Mother and whilst all of that was going on I got a phone call from a member of the band Killing Joke to say the track of theirs that I played before the Pat Kelly track was wasn't actually Turned to Red at all but Nervous System doesn't matter a lot anyway cos I've played them but uh the label is misleading uh this is Filmcast the sound of young Stowmarket and it's Life in a Filmcast.")
  • Filmcast: Life In A Film Cast (single) True Friends
(JP: "Rural strangeness on True Friends records that's Filmcast and Life in a Filmcast and doubtless you're all familiar with the record Earcom 1 we had sessions from the Pratts and the Flowers who were featured on it and now here comes Earcom 2 and the first track I'm going to play I'm going to play four in the course of the programme the first of them is by Thursday's and it's a well it's a song you may recognize.")
  • Thursdays: (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay (LP – Earcom 2) Fast
  • Cowboys International: Here Comes A Saturday (LP – The Original Sin) Virgin
(Radio One jingle)
(JP: “I'll do my best. I'll do my best. That's Stiff Little Fingers and that's called Nobody's Hero. A couple of treats coming up later in the week, one of them tomorrow night, when Andy Peebles makes his debut on Top Of The Pops. And I bet he’s dead nervous, and I hope he does well because he’s a good lad. I shall be watching anyway. And I do Roundtable this coming weekend, Kid Jerkin’s Roundtable, with Graham Parker and Ellen Foley – I don’t know either. Frank Stokes and Mr Crump Don’t Like It.”)
(JP: "Ah frying tonight that's Frank Stokes from the LP Creator of the Memphis Blues well I mean it was a bit rough it was recorded in 1927 Mr Crump Don't Like It. The end of tonight's programme as well of course which featured Stiff Little Fingers. (Pause.) On tomorrow night's it's sessions from 2TV from Leeds and the Quads from Birmingham and more interesting records of one sort or another I shouldn't wonder and um is there anything else for me to say tonight don't think there is really and the phone's ringing so I better go. Good night.")
  • File 2 cuts out just before John finishes his outro
  • File 1 includes full outro and 3 minutes of news.
