Debut session from Egg, whose reputation among progressive rock fans lasted much longer than the band itself did (around three years). According to Ken Garner's The Peel Sessions (p.279), they passed their BBC audition, even if one panel member wrote "Cleverness here, but no entertainment"
Jane de Mendelssohn is this week's guest poet. She was a journalist for International Times, who interviewed Jimi Hendrix early in the year; the interview is noted on the official Jimi Hendrix website and is available in the IT online archive[1]. She may have been married at the time to Felix de Mendelssohn (who also wrote for IT and appeared on Night Ride as a poet, under the name of Felix Scorpio; one of her poems is called "Gemini versus Scorpio"), although online info on her is scarce.
Final track is "Amazing Grace" by the Great Awakening, which wasn't a hit but became known during 1969-70 as the theme tune of the Isle Of Wight festival and of Radio Geronimo, which broadcast all-night Peel-influenced playlists on Radio Monte Carlo at weekends during 1970.
