John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

  • Peel plays several Belgian New Beat records on the show and after playing the Bulgarka track at 45rpm, he plays it briefly at 33rpm in comparison.
  • Peel plays a couple of Finnish language tracks which includes Mieskuoro Huutajat covering Finland's national anthem in a shouting mode as well as an album track from Radiopuhelimet, which he describes as nearly the best non-English language album this year.
  • Peel plays the Positively Black track at the wrong speed, thinking it sounds like that until he realises it isn't and quickly corrects the song at the right speed.
  • Peel reads out the top ten of the Nescafe Student All Time Top Fifty chart of 1988 organised by university radio to illustrate that his programme is not always popular with students. The result is 10: Hazel O'Conner - Will You, 9: Smiths - How Soon Is Now?, 8: Kate Bush: Wuthering Heights, 7: Dire Straits - Romeo And Juliet, 6: Simple Minds - Don't You Forget About Me, 5: Gerry Rafferty: Baker Street, 4: New Order - Blue Monday, 3: Ultravox - Vienna, 2: Led Zeppelin: Stairway To Heaven, 1: Queen: Bohemian Rhapsody
