John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

  • This Perfumed Garden has been circulating in both original lo-fi and reconstructed versions. Like most available PGs it is incomplete, the original recording having been made on reel-to-reel tapes which may not have survived in full.
  • The Incredible String Band became one of Peel's favourite acts of the period, doing sessions for his BBC shows until they split up in 1974. Regular plays of tracks from their The 5000 Spirits.... album on the Perfumed Garden helped establish their reputation beyond the folk scene. Side one of the album was premiered on this show and side two on the show of of 20 July 1967.
  • Peel was able to get an advance copy of the LP thanks to Clive Selwood, who at the time was running the UK office of Elektra Records and was the only music business figure aware of the Perfumed Garden, which included many Elektra artists in its playlists (Love, The Doors, Tim Buckley, Judy Collins, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band). Selwood became Peel's manager and lifelong friend, and in his autobiography devotes a couple of interesting chapters to their relationship.
  • Peel's full comments from the available recording of this show can be found at 19 July 1967 (Transcript).
  • Files b and c are clearer than file a, and the small gap in the edit is closed up, though the edit is at the same position. The timing of the edit suggests that this was due to the reel to reel being copied on to a C90 cassette but both file a and b missed a few minutes while doing so.
  • File d) below appears to be a later broadcast of a reel to reel by the Dutch station Radio Seagull and has the same edit as File b, suggesting that was the source.
  • File e) seems to be a shorter version of b/c)
  • Newly available File f) has no gap in the audio at the 46 minute mark, and is the only file here to contain the strange non-contest announcement by Peel. Strangely this non-contest was mentioned in one of the first versions of this page, in 2009, though the details do not appear in the transcript page. This suggests that the unknown wiki contributor had access to the full tape but did not at the time make it available. File f) also continues beyond the previous shares, which seemed to run out after a second side of C90.
  • A rare "all-blue" show, in that every artist has a dedicated page on the wiki
  • While the filenames say the 18th July, this is probably due to a non-standard date naming protocol for shows that started at midnight. A new show which is clearly from the 18th (as in 0000 18th) has now appeared, this means that the two subsequent shows needed to be shunted forward a day.
