John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

  • Peel plays some new "recordings" from Black Francis, singer of the Pixies, who is playing the electric guitar, without the other members of the band. Peel describes this as "we're talking solo stuff, here". Despite this, several internet sources refer to this set of tracks as recorded under the Pixies name. Peel mentions that due to being unlikely to having a full suite of listeners tonight he would look at re-broadcasting this on a later date, although there is no evidence this ever happened on his show. Interestingly John at no point refers to this as a session, and Ken Garner does not mention this Black Francis or Pixies session on this programme in his Peel Sessions book. They may well have been self-recorded, or demo solo try-out tapes that he sent to the BBC to play. The Pixies At The BBC wikipedia page mentions that it was recorded on 11th June 1990, but broadcast on 10th August 1990, which is a wrong date. The set contains some preview tracks from the Pixies next album, plus a cover of the Beach Boys' Hang On To Your Ego.
  • Peel plays a couple of tracks from Sonic Youth's Goo album. He states that Tunic (Song For Karen) is the best track on the album.
  • Peel mentions being stressed throughout the programme after England just managed to beat Egypt 1-0 at the World Cup football tournament.
