John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

23 Skidoo are a British band playing a fusion of industrial, post-punk, funk, and world music. Formed in 1979 by Fritz Catlin, Johnny Turnbull and Sam Mills, later augmented by Alex Turnbull and Tom Heslop, they are often grouped with artists such as A Certain Ratio, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, Pop Group and This Heat.

Their first 7", "Ethics", was released in 1980, followed by "The Gospel Comes To New Guinea" & "Last Words" 12" single. which was co-produced by Stephen Mallinder, Richard H. Kirk and Chris Watson from Cabaret Voltaire at their studio, The Western Works in Sheffield. A Peel Session was recorded on 16 September 1981. Their début album, “Seven Songs”, co-produced by Genesis P-Orridge, and Peter Christopherson of Throbbing Gristle/Psychic TV, was released in 1982 and went straight to number 1 in the Independent charts.[1]

Peel played 23 Skidoo regularly in the first half of the 1980s, from the release of debut single “Ethics” in 1981, with the band recording a single session the same year, and occasionally returned to their earlier material in later decades.

In the 1990s, the 23 Skidoo track “Coup” was (allegedly) sampled (without compensation) by the Chemical Brothers on UK chart hit “Block Rockin’ Beats”, which also appeared in the duo’s only Peel session.[2]

At the end of February 2013, two 23 Skidoo LPs were found when johnpeelarchive.com resumed the online release of details of Peel’s Record Collection, with the first 100 LPs by artists whose names start with numbers.[3]
