Tracklisting[]
File 6 begins
- intro to show
- Bow Wow Wow: Radio G String (Peel Session)
Files 1 & 5 start here
- Echo & the Bunnymen: 'Heaven Up Here' (Peel Session)
- (JP: 'Echo & the Bunnymen and that's called Heaven Up Here and I think in reading out the lists of all the bands that was going to be doing sessions over the Christmas and New Year period, I've been omitting each night to read out the name of Misty and I apologise to them and to you for doing this because one of my favourite sessions of the year, this is Bail Out.')
- Misty: 'Bail Out' (Peel Session)
- (JP: 'That's Misty and Bail Out. I should very much like to, at the moment, I must admit. 'Cos today has quite clearly been one of those days, a number of small and rather unimportant incidents which I won't weary you with. But at lunchtime I was supposed to have a drink with Altered Images and, well I did in a sense, in that a few of them turned up, but Clare never did. Isn't that typical, I mean isn't life like that in so many ways? Like a play for today, and that's the title of this from The Cure.')
- Cure: 'Play For Today' (Peel Session)
- (JP: ‘The Cure and Play For Today. And our Ruts session was recorded on Monday the 11th February of this year, produced by Tony Wilson and a couple of numbers from it appeared of course subsequently on LP. This is one of them, Demolition Dancing.')
- Ruts: 'Demolition Dancing' (Peel Session)
- (JP: 'Demolition Dancing and those are the Ruts. And, Uh. What was I going to tell you now? Ah, yes. The Festive Fifty, we'll be rejoining that in almost exactly an hour's time, in case if you want to make a note of that. Don't know why you should do. Bow Wow Wow - Fools Rush In.')
- Bow Wow Wow: 'Fools Rush In' (Peel Session) [2]
- Teardrop Explodes: 'Thief Of Baghdad' (Peel Session)
- (JP: 'Thief Of Baghdad by the Teardrop Explodes. Before that, Bow Wow Wow and Fools Rush In. And about two weeks before, no about a month, no a couple of weeks before Christmas, Sounds phoned me up and said to me would I make a list of my twenty favourite singles and LPs of the year and of course I did this, spending about well the best part of a day really, poring over lists, pulling out records, checking this and checking that, agonising over it, and they never phoned me back to find out what they were, but the Teardrop Explodes album [Kilimanjaro] was one of them, and another was that by Echo and the Bunnymen [Crocodiles].')
- Echo & the Bunnymen: 'Turquoise Daze' [3] (Peel Session)
- (JP: ‘Echo & the Bunnymen and that’s Turquoise Daze and if you were listening to last night’s programme then you’ll already know that A Forest by The Cure was #18 in the Festive Fifty. Here’s the session version of it.‘)
- Cure: 'A Forest' (Peel Session)
- (JP: ‘The Cure and A Forest. Sounds like very much the record, actually, doesn’t it? Haven’t noticed that before. And now The Ruts, Staring At the Rude Boys.’)
- Ruts: 'Staring At The Rude Boys' (Peel Session)
- Misty: 'Wise And Foolish' (Peel Session)
- (JP: ‘That’s Misty and Wise and Foolish. And before that, their former mates and people on Unite Records, The Ruts and Staring At The Rude Boys. (File cuts off.) And That Golden Smile.'
File 6 pauses
- outro to above track
Files 1 & 5 pause and File 5 resumes
- Bow Wow Wow: Baby On Mars (Peel Session)
Files 1 & 5 resume
- Echo & The Bunnymen: 'That Golden Smile' (Peel Session) §
File 1 ends near end of above track
- (JP: 'Echo & The Bunnymen - That Golden Smile. The band have as yet made no contribution to the Festive Fifty. The Teardrop Explodes had Treason at number 43 and this is their When I Dream.') §
- Teardrop Explodes: 'When I Dream' (Peel Session) §
- Cure: 'M' (Peel Session) §
- (JP: 'The Cure preceded by Teardrop Explodes and this next is for The Astrorodes who are even now driving back home to Durham and Sunderland, who've got a record out called Snakebite, which I still haven't heard, lads but see you again sometime, anyway. The Ruts.)
- Ruts: 'Secret Soldiers' (Peel Session) §
- Bow Wow Wow: 'Uomo-Sex-al-Apache' (Peel Session) §
- (JP: 'Bow Wow Wow and Uomo-al-Sex-al-Apache. (Laughs) I can't even say it. How's that for interesting? And before that The Ruts and Secret Soldiers. There's not much to talk about on programmes like this, is there really? I don't get a chance to impress you with my bewitching personality. Oh well, press on.') §
- Echo & The Bunnymen: 'All My Colours Turn To Clouds' (Peel Session) §
- (JP: 'Echo and The Knights of The Bun. And that's All My Colours Turn to Clouds. Now The Cure again and 17 Seconds.")
- Cure: '17 Seconds' (Peel Session) §
- (JP:' That's The Cure and 17 Seconds. Misty have a new single out which is an instrumental press rather surprisingly and this isn't it.")
- Misty: 'Peace And Love' (Peel Session) §
- (JP: ' The ever wonderful Misty and that's called Peace And Love and we'll be taking a nosedive back into the Festive Fifty shortly, but before that, the last from the Ruts and this is In A Rut.') §
File 3 & 4 cut in during next track
- Ruts: 'In A Rut 1980' (Peel Session) §
- (JP: 'In A Rut 1980 and the record of that was in the Festive Fifty last night at number 19. Now we go back to the Festive Fifty. Starting at number 10 and at Number 10, another new entry.') §
1980 Festive Fifty: Numbers 10-01[]
- 10:Joy Division, 'Transmission (7")' (Factory)
- (JP: 'That's the fifth so far from Joy Division. Will there be more? We shall see. We shall see. At number 10, that's Transmission. Interesting to see too how well they do next year if there is a next year of course. And this next was number 11 in 1978, number 6 in 1979, number 9 this year.')
- 09:Stiff Little Fingers, 'Alternative Ulster (LP-Inflammable Material)' (Rough Trade)
- (JP: 'At number 9, Alternative Ulster. Sounds almost tranquil now, doesn't it? And that's Stiff Little Fingers. Number 8 record, one tiptoeing upwards actually. 13 two years ago. Number 10 last year. Number 8 this. The Lady Diana song.')
- 08:Damned, 'New Rose (LP-Damned Damned Damned)' (Stiff)
File 6 ends
- (JP: 'No offense intended, you know nobility of course. Those are The Damned and that's at number 8. New Rose. And at number 7, another oldie which was 10 in 1978. Number 2 last year and I'm appalled to see the best record of the past dozen years drop five places but it's your decision.')
- 07:Undertones, Teenage Kicks (7")' (Good Vibrations)
- (JP: 'Still makes the hairs of the back of my head prickle every time I hear that, you know. Those are the Undertones. Number 7 in the Festive Fifty, of course. Teenage Kicks. Should have been number 1 every year since it came out, but no matter. At number 6. Another new entry... Um... A bit of a surprise, this. I think.')
- 06:Dead Kennedys, 'Holiday In Cambodia (7")' (Cherry Red) §
- (JP: 'Dead Kennedys. A new entry at number 6 in the Festive Fifty and the stamped addressed envelopes have been pouring into the BBC - well at least to Brian and myself - during the past couple of days, from people wanting copies of the Festive Fifty. Photocopies of the list that I so neatly typed myself too, which has got maybe messed up slightly with pencil marks made by Walters, but it still looks a pretty neat bit of typing. Not a single mistake on it, y'know, on the whole thing. And you also get #51 - 65 if you ask for a copy of it. What you have to do is send us a stamped address envelope - and you won't get one unless you do, frankly, because we can't afford them to mail out millions of them - stamped addressed envelope to Music-Loving Johnny Plee, care of BBC Radio One, London, W1A 4WW, and mark your envelopes, if you would, 'Sheena Easton', so that we know that it's a copy of the Festive Fifty that you're after. The number 5 record was number 7, two years ago. Number 3, last year. These are the Clash. Hold on. There we go.')
- (JP: 'Turning rebellion into money, the Clash at #5 in the Festive Fifty. (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais. And at number 4, a record which was number 4 last year. Number 24 in 1978. These are The Jam.') §
- (JP (following last line of song, "Don't wanna go down in the tube station at midnight"): 'Or any other time if you ask me. Those are The Jam and Down In The Tube Station At Midnight. And that's Number 4 in the Festive Fifty. Getting exciting, eh, isn't it? Do you feel that? Perhaps you do, perhaps you don't. I do, actually. At number 3 a new entry. Perhaps you won't be surprised by this.') §
- 03:Joy Division, 'Love Will Tear Us Apart (12")' (Factory)
- (JP:' Joy Division and Love Will Tear Us Apart. A new entry to the Festive Fifty. Straight in at Number 3. And if that wasn't not enough. This is in at Number 2.')
- 02:Joy Division, 'Atmosphere (7"-Licht Und Blindheit)' (Sordide Sentimental)
- (JP: 'And I bet there's not a person listening who doesn't know what's number 1. That's number 2. Joy Division and Atmosphere. And so far we've had seven from Joy Division, five from The Clash, four from Stiff Little Fingers, The Fall and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Three from the Sex Pistols, Damned and Public Image Ltd. And two apiece from The Jam, Dead Kennedys, The Undertones and Killing Joke. And at #1, and with more than twice the number of votes that "Atmosphere" had, this again.')
- 01:Sex Pistols, 'Anarchy In The UK (LP-Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols)' (Virgin)
- (JP: 'And that's Number 1 for the third successive year, Anarchy In The UK. The Sex Pistols, of course. Tomorrow night you're encouraged to see the New Year in with Adrian Juste, lots of music and lots of yocks. I'll be back on Thursday night with the Comsat Angels and The Selecter and a curious selection of records and I also have an extraordinary confession to make to you. Radio 1 transmitters are now closing down until 5 O' Clock tomorrow morning where we'll be joining Radio 2 until 7 O' Clock and then DLT will be along with the Breakfast show. Happy New Year to all of you. (Pause.) Obvious thing to say but I do mean it. Goodnight.')
