John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

  • File 1 contains a couple of poems which may well have been from a guest poet slot on Peel's Night Ride. These were not always noted in Ken's "The Peel Sessions", and if they were, did not feature in the track details section of the book. Adrian Mitchell was featured on the first Night Ride and these may be from that show (06 March 1968) or from the first anniversary show (05 March 1969). The date is unlikely to be mid 1968 as Mitchell's only other Night Ride appearances were on the anniversary show (parts of which, notably the Incredible String Band session, are available) and the final "son of Night Ride" on 24 September 1969, a recording of which hasn't yet been found. A short additional piece with Peel's outro has now been found, dating the excerpts to be from a book published in 1968. (Peel referred to Mitchell's Out Loud collection on the show of 06 March 1968, which confirms the date).
  • File 2 contains a couple of poems recorded in front of an audience. and it is not certain that this was taken from a Peel Night Ride. The first poem, "Tell Me Lies" was read by Mitchell at the famous "Wholly Communion" poetry event at the Royal Albert Hall in 1965, so, judging by the sound quality, they may be from a recording made then. Alternatively, they may be from a live recording braodcast on Radio 3 sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s. BBC Genome lists a few possible dates, e.g. here, here and here - among others.

(Please add details of any commercial release of these sessions)
