The Blades are an Irish new wave/power pop band formed in 1977 in the south Dublin neighbourhood of Ringsend. The original lineup consisted of Paul Cleary (bass/vocals), his brother Lar Cleary (guitar), and Pat Larkin (drums). The group were influenced by the late 70s mod revival bands such as The Jam and gained significant attention in their home city during the early 80s with songs such as 'Hot For You' and 'Ghost Of A Chance'. In 1982, after personnel changes, the band signed to Reekus Records, the first single of which 'The Bride Wore White', was voted best single in the Hot Press National Poll, and The Blades voted 'the most promising act in Ireland'. Their highest charting singles; 'Downmarket', had a 2 week run in the Irish charts in 1983, peaking at #28. "The Last Man In Europe" and "Those Were the Days" both peaked at #21 in 1985, the former having a 3 week run.
After numerous delays, their debut album, 'The Last Man In Europe' was released in 1985. Despite still maintaining a local cult following, the album failed to land the group much international success, and they split the following year. Paul Cleary continued with a band called The Partisans, and later led an eight-piece pub rock band called The Cajun Kings. He also released solo material.
In 2013, The Blades reformed for live performances, including an appearance on The Late Late Show. In November 2015, they released their first new music since 1985 with a 4-track EP entitled Smalltime, and subsequently their 2nd studio album, 'Modernised', the following year. The band have continued to play annual shows around Ireland ever since.
