The Brilliant Corners were a British indie pop band from Bristol who recorded throughout the 1980s and into the early 1990s. The group was formed in 1983, taking the name from the Thelonious Monk jazz album, Brilliant Corners. The line-up included David Woodward (b. Avonmouth, Bristol, England; vocals, guitar), Chris Galvin (1959 – 22 December 1998; bass guitar), Winston Forbes (lead guitar, percussion, backing vocals, died in 2019), Bob Morris (drums) and Dan (occasional trumpet and keyboards). A later addition was Phil Elvins on guitar. The band released several albums and singles before splitting up in 1993. Woodward and Galvin formed the Experimental Pop Band in 1995. Galvin died from cancer in 1998.
Links to Peel[]
In an interview with the Penny Black Music website, singer David Woodward was asked whether he met Peel:
"Me and Chris met John Peel in Bristol when he was doing a disco. They were called discos. It was at Redland Poly site and, well, it was like meeting the Pope. He was just so down to earth in an odd kind of way. It might have been the same night U2 were playing - I could be confused about this. I do remember us talking about toothpaste for ages. He had forgot his. A dream come true those sessions" [1]
Peel supported the band on his shows and the group did three sessions for his programmes. After 1990, Peel rarely played material from the group, even their last studio album, A History Of White Trash, released in 1993, did not receive any airplay from him.
