Charly Records is a British record label that specialises in reissued material. Among the labels whose original releases are reissued by Charly are Vee-Jay, Sun, Immediate, BYG, Tomato, and Fania. It was founded in France in 1974 by Jean-Luc Young, who had been a promoter of teen concerts, but moved to the UK in 1975.

(JP, My Top Ten (Transcript), July 1984: on why R&B is an area where he likes going back to years gone by):
"Well, for several reasons. One, because particularly the recent compilation LPs which have been coming from Kent and Ace and Charly Records, and one or two other labels. They were mainly things I had never heard before, you know. […] And I do occasionally like [...] to put a few of my old favourites from that era in, because I know that the majority of the people that listen to the programme probably won’t have heard them before either or won’t know them terribly well. […] The occasional reference point from the past I think is quite useful as well, something that helps you identify with things that are going on now."
Peel played Charly releases of archive material regularly across the post-Top Gear decades, starting on 03 February 1976, according to show tracklistings on this site, with three tracks from the LP 'The Yardbirds Featuring Eric Clapton' (while promising to return the following evening with material from the companion record 'The Yardbirds Featuring Jeff Beck'). In 2003 and 2004, he gave airtime to over a dozen tracks from the 6xCD Jimmy Reed box set 'The Vee-Jay Years'.
In the years between, especially in the 1980s, he featured numerous releases on the label, particularly from its Charly R&B imprint [1], including vintage blues and soul, covering both old favourites (Earl Bostic, John Lee Hooker, Lightnin' Hopkins, Elmore James, O.V. Wright) and new discoveries, from single-artist collections and re-issued LPs to themed various-artist (v/a) compilations. Among the rarities, 'No More Ghettos In America' by Stanley Winston was played from the 1982 'Stan's Soul Shop' LP, before turning up after the DJ's death in John Peel's Record Box of his most treasured singles.
There were also many plays of Sun Records material (Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison), including from.'The Roots Of Rock' 15xLP series, as well as tracks from other US label samplers, such as the two-volume 'Red Bird Story' (Shangri-Las, Linda Jones).
Peel seemed to feature relatively fewer Charly releases from the 1990s onwards, with the label caught up in legal battles with MCA over Chess Records rights and the DJ relishing a flood of high-quality CD offerings from rival UK reissue specialist Ace Records.
