Links to Peel[]
In the 60's, Peel did play some songs from China that were found in the BBC Archives, but in the 70's, rarely played much material from the country, due to its ever increasing isolation in the international community.
After visiting Hong Kong, which at that time was part of British rule, in 1986, Peel obtained records of Cantonese language covers of pop songs from artists such as Sally Yeh. A year later in 1987, his friend and colleague, Andy Kershaw, gave him a copy of an album from Yao Su Rong, who was born in Taiwan, an island that the People's Republic Of China claims territory off, which Peel played a track from on his 29 July 1987 show.
崔健 混子
During the 90's, a listener sent Peel a copy of Cui Jian's album, an artist that is considered to be 'the father of Chinese Rock', which he played a track from on his 29 July 1998 programme. After Peel played the track, he said he'll may play a song from Cui Jian again, but it didn't seem according to available tracklistings that he did.
In 2002, a compilation album called, 'Asian Takeaways', was given some airplay on Peel's shows and many of the songs played were from ethnic Chinese singers such as Yao Su Rong and Chang Siao Ying.
