Count Five was an American garage rock band, formed in San Jose, California in 1964, known for their hit single "Psychotic Reaction".
"Psychotic Reaction", an acknowledged cornerstone of garage rock, was initially devised by Byrne, with the group refining it and turning it into the highlight of their live sets. The song was influenced by the style of contemporary musicians such as The Standells and The Yardbirds. The band was rejected by several record labels before they got signed to the Los Angeles-based Double Shot Records. "Psychotic Reaction" was released as a single, peaking at number five in the U.S. charts in late 1966. The band enjoyed limited success for a short time, dropping out of view altogether when their only hit had fallen from public memory.

Links To Peel[]
“Let me remind you yet again, that I wrote sleevenotes for the first Count Five LP, which they considered were too weird to use.” (John Peel, 10 January 1980)
There seems little reason to doubt Peel's story of writing rejected sleevenotes for the first and only Count Five LP. In 1966, when the California band hit the US charts with their "Psychotic Reaction" single, the DJ was working for KMEN radio station in San Bernardino and contributing to its Kmentertainer publication.
The single was released in the UK in autumn 1966. It never made the national charts, but spent some weeks on the playlists of the pirate radio stations Radio London[1] and Radio Caroline[2], although it doesn't appear in any surviving playlists from Peel's 1967 stint on Radio London.
In later years on Radio One, Peel occasionally played the band's only hit, reflecting its status as something of a garage rock classic, along with cover versions by the Cramps and others.
