Crazy Horse is an American rock band best known for their association with Neil Young. Beginning in 1969 and continuing to the present day, they have been co-credited on a number of Young's albums, with 11 studio albums and numerous live albums being billed as by Neil Young and Crazy Horse. They have also released six studio albums of their own, issued between 1971 and 2009.
Billy Talbot (bass) and Ralph Molina (drums) have been the only consistent members of the band. On four of Crazy Horse's studio albums, Talbot and Molina serve as the rhythm section to an entirely different group of musicians. Except for three notable intervals, Frank "Poncho" Sampedro (rhythm guitar) has regularly performed with the group from 1975 until 2018.
Links to Peel[]
Peel remarked on his 27 March 1971 show that the band's debut self titled LP was one of the best he'd heard in a long, long time. It was well received by critics (Peel mentioned that an American critic had made it her record of the year, "in March") and JP said that he would play all of the tracks from it (although a shortage of tracklisitngs from the period means this can't be verified). It was their most successful LP and musicians featured on it included Ry Cooder and Nils Lofgren. The songs included "I Don't Want To Talk About It", written by band member Danny Whitten, which was later recorded by Rod Stewart and became a UK number one hit in 1977. A decade later, a version by Everything But The Girl reached number three in the British charts.
Peel would often play their material in the early 70's, but mostly in connection with their association with Neil Young. After 1972 most of their recorded work was as Young's backing band and none of their later albums matched the impact of their debut.
