John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Dan Yankee & the Carpet Baggers - If You Gotta Go, Go No

Dann Yankee And The Carpet Baggers were an obscure 60's American garage rock band from Oklahoma City, who only released one single, 'Roll Over Beethoven', a cover of a Chuck Berry song, which contained the b-side, 'If You Gotta Go-Go Now!!', a Bob Dylan cover. There is very little information about the band on the internet.

Peel would often tell on his shows about how he managed the band when they were on tour in 1965, whilst living in America, especially the event where whilst driving with the group, he pulled over the side to listen to an Otis Redding song played on the radio. On My Top Ten (Transcript), he mentioned the following to Andy Peebles:

"Well, this is a record I first heard, I used to live in Oklahoma and work for a radio station just outside Oklahoma City. I used to do gigs on Indian reservations in the south of the state. It’s one of these things which sounds “come on, he’s making this up” – but it is true. And I used to work with a band called Dann Yankee & The Carpetbaggers, who were wonderful people. And we were driving back from the gig, it must have been 3 or 4 o’clock in the morning listening to a radio station coming from Memphis and this next record came on. And this is another one of those things – funnily enough, they mostly seem to happen to me in cars – and we actually pulled over to the side of the road and we were just transfixed. Otis Redding, and this is Ole Man Trouble."

On his 28 November 2002 show, Peel mentioned how he would love to get a copy of the band's only record along with another group called Jay Walker & The Pedestrians.
