John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

George Thorogood

George Lawrence Thorogood (born February 24, 1950) is an American musician, singer and songwriter from Wilmington, Delaware. His "high-energy boogie-blues" sound became a staple of 1980s rock radio, with hits like his original songs "Bad to the Bone" and "I Drink Alone". He has also helped to popularize older songs by American icons, such as "Move It on Over", "Who Do You Love?", and "House Rent Blues/One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer". With his band, the Destroyers, Thorogood has released over 20 albums, of which two have been certified Platinum and six have been certified Gold. He has sold 15 million albums worldwide.

Peel was a fan of the artist and on Sounds, published on 24th June 1978 (and later republished in Olivetti Chronicles) introduced the group at Dingwalls in London, where he described his band's performance as:

"Uncle John coming as close to dancing as he ever gets, and the perspiration was fair cascading down my body by the end of the set. Good, rowdy, vulgar stuff."

Peel played George Thorogood's songs frequently in the late 70's, but in the 80's, rarely played much material. In the 90's, Peel didn't seem to play any tracks from the musician, but when Thorogood's, Move It On Over, album was reissued in 2003, JP listed it as one of his albums of the month for March 2003 (Peel's Record Box) and played songs from the singer's back catalogue. He may well have been inspired to take a second look at Thorogood's music by Andy Kershaw, who was keen enough on the singer's records to have him in session on his show and interview him in the studio,
