Links To Peel[]
Writing in the Observer in 1986, Peel cited GlobeStyle with fellow specialist independent labels such as Earthworks, DiscAfrique and Stern's as “smaller operators [who] knew that there had never been any serious possibility that African music would make the pop charts, and that what was needed was the establishment of a catalogue of releases that would sell steadily over the years as people learned of the potency of the music.”[1]
As well as leading African session artists with releases on GlobeStyle, Peel also gave plentiful airtime to the label's homegrown world music mavericks 3 Mustaphas 3, who visited Maida Vale seven times for his show. Among its notable albums, GlobalStyle put out the Kanda Bongo Man LP 'Non Stop Non Stop', which featured fellow soukous legend and session star Diblo Dibala on guitar.[2]
From across the world, other GS artists played on the Peel wingding include Dissidenten, Eduardo Durão And Orquestra Durão, Ofra Haza, Jugala Orchestra, Lemchaheb, Pablo Lubadika Porthos, Marcé Et Tumpak, Abdel Aziz El Mubarak, Ferus Mustafov, Rakotozafy, Puseletso Seema, and U. Srinivas, along with many more.
The label also issued numerous themed v/a compilations favoured by JP. Long after his death, one of the lots in the Record Collection: Auction (July 2025): Theme Packs: Albums sale of items from his archive included the GlobeStyle salsa collection '¡Oye Listen!', which he had played on release in 1987.[3]
In 1987, Roger Armstrong of GlobeStyle (and Ace Records) was one of the two people responsible for calling the meeting in a London pub that led to the adoption of "world music" as a marketing term.[4]. Peel had mixed feelings about the move.[5]
