John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Godley & Creme were an English rock duo composed of Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. The pair began releasing albums as a duo after splitting from the pop band 10cc. In 1979 they directed their first music video for their own single "An Englishman in New York". After this, they became involved in directing videos for such artists as Ultravox, The Police, Duran Duran, Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Wang Chung, as well as directing the ground-breaking video for their own "Cry" in 1985. The duo split at the end of the 1980s and have both been involved in music videos, TV commercials, and sporadic music projects since.

Godley & Creme - L FULL ALBUM 1978

Peel heard but was not impressed by Godley & Creme's highly experimental 1977 debut, Consequences, a triple-album box set. On his 18 August 1978 show, he confessed he had dreaded listening to their new album, L. In fact, he was plesantly surprised by it and thought some of the tracks were very good:

"As one of the very few people on the planet who sat down and listened to the entire 26-LP set of Consequences I wasn't really looking forward a great deal to the new LP by Godley & Creme, which is just called L, the letter L as in Steve Hillage, and I was greatly surprised when I did listen to it, some of it is very good indeed, a strong Zappa influence throughout it, on most of the tracks, and on this one, the voice of Paul Gambaccini can be heard"

The track featuring Paul Gambaccini's cameo voice appearance which Peel was referring to was The Sporting Life song. The L album was not received well by critics and wasn't successful commercially. The follow up, called Freeze Frame, was received enthusiastically by Peel who described it as another good album on his 06 November 1979 show:

"Now if you were making a list of things which are terribly, terribly unhip, having started with something like dysentery you'd probably move on to former members of 10CC. And yet messrs Godley and Creme have made another good LP. It's not going to be to everybody's taste, but it's to mine."
