John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Hollywood Flames

The Hollywood Flames were an American R&B vocal group in the 1950s, best known for their American No. 11 hit "Buzz-Buzz-Buzz" in 1957.

They formed as The Flames in 1949, in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, at a talent show where members of various high school groups got together. The original members were Bobby Byrd (lead), David Ford, Curlee Dinkins and Willie Ray Rockwell. Rockwell was replaced by Clyde Tillis, and Ford sometimes sang lead. Their first paying gig was at Johnny Otis's Barrelhouse Club. They first recorded in 1950 for the Selective label, and the following year, billed as The Hollywood Four Flames, released "Tabarin", a song written by Murry Wilson (father of The Beach Boys). They later recorded another Wilson song, "I'll Hide My Tears".

Peel played some tracks from the group on his shows in 1993 via a compilation album, but didn't seem to play their songs on his shows during the 60's, 70's, 80's or the 00's, according to available tracklistings on this site.

On his 15 October 1986 show, before playing Buzz Buzz Buzz by the Primitives, Peel mentioned that there was another song with the same title sang by a group in the 50's, but he couldn't play it because he could not remember who sang it. It turned out to be from the Hollywood Flames.
