John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Born into a Jewish family amidst the Catholic/Protestant sectarianism of Glasgow, Bernstein attended socialist Jewish youth clubs in the city and later on life squatted in Limehouse, London with a desire to work in the music industry, and after establishing himself as a DJ, eventually found a job working as a teaboy at Lillie Yard studios. He then later became tape operator, then assistant engineer and worked three years as assistant to soundtrack composer Stanley Myers. Later on he produced music for himself and for others including soundtracks for films.

During his youth, Howie would spend time listening to Peel's shows and described in the Sonic PR, how he was influenced by Peel:

"When I was in secondary school I started listening to Peel. Then it was an awful lot of alternative music and dub. Peel turned me on to dub music something awful. I’d be sitting with a little Philips recorder, ready to record, waiting for him to play something I liked. And those tapes were mainly of the reggae stuff. Then I got into punk, Santana, Journey, John McLaughlin, Gentle Giant, jazz. But it was all coming from Peel: he was the one sewing seeds in my head." [1]

Peel played some of Howie B's music (including groups he was involved in) on his shows and both performed at the 2003 Big Chill festival as DJ's.
