John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Hula

Hula were formed in Sheffield originally founded by Mark Albrow, Alan Fish and Ron Wright in 1981. The group furrowed a techno-industrial-multi-media path unmistakably influenced by Cabaret Voltaire (whose Stephen Mallinder produced their first single), yet fused with their own esoteric impulses into a unique strain of future- shock rock. Hula undercut its cluttered rhythms and flanged, ranting vocals with seriously funky bass and a disorienting melodic undertow; the media-overload of their live shows (employing at least a dozen film projectors) combined with the pulverizing music to build a mindbomb of epic proportions. The band released their last material in the end of the 80's, before splitting up sometime in the early 90's.

In an interview with the NME in December 1984, Ron Wright mentioned the group doing the Dutch version of the Peel session on VPRO stating that they give you more time than the BBC. [1]

Several months later they did their first Peel session in March 1985.

Peel saw the group perform when they were touring with Depeche Mode at Wembley Arena in April 1986. [2]

In total, the group did three sessions for Peel's show during the mid 80's.
