Born in Bradford, Yorkshire in 1875, Jack Pleasants was an artist who was popular in Northern music halls in the early part of the twentieth century. Many of his recordings reveal that he was content to play the part of the 'Bashful Fool', an ingenue whose assumed lack of experience with women appeared to be merely a surface veneer. He played in the Prince's Theatre Bristol production of 'Aladdin' in the 1916 winter season (obviously too old by then to volunteer for wartime service). On another panto engagement in 1924, when he subbed for Arthur Lucan and Kitty McShane, it is said that Jack dropped dead on stage at only 49 years of age [1].
