John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Jay Walker & The Pedestrians were active in the Oklahoma area around 1965, played the local dance circuit and were hired by KOMA radio station.[1] Down the years, other bands with the same name have played in various places.

In later years, Peel claimed to have branched out into band management during the time he worked for KOMA in Oklahoma in the mid-1960s, citing Jay Walker & The Pedestrians and Dann Yankee & The Carpetbaggers, who supposedly performed on Indian reservations, with Peel also serving as their driver.[2]

Relatively little further information about Jay Walker & The Pedestrians was available until their drummer, Mike McGuire, started this page, noting that the band "never played at Indian reservations and once we drove him." Mike has since supplied more details about the band and their links with Peel. Many thanks indeed to Mike for sharing his story:

I played drums with J.Walker and the Pedestrians. We were a four-piece group ... bass, guitar, keyboard and me (Benny Aldridge, Jerry Mosley, Brian Hinther, and me, Mike McGuire). We would provide entertainment for kids in rural communities. We hooked up with the KOMA "Wing Ding" series in the summer of 1965 under the name of the "Centaurians" and auditioned at KOMA. The DJ put us to work till the "Centuries" threatened a law suit, so we changed our name and took a break to reorganize.

We were still playing our self-sponsored gigs in rural communities, then we started interfering with the "Wing Dings." Paul Miller (Menard) says, "Hey, I'm pissed off at you guys, wanna work for us?" Anyway we set up an audition with John Ravenscroft at our place in Edmond, OK. Here he comes roaring up in his Corvette, way cool (we were like 18). We performed a lot of English stuff, old R and R etc... Had a diverse act. So we got to be the Ravenscroft/Miller band for a while, had a great time. We went to one gig way the hell out in western OK. and gave John a ride (we had a 1950 Caddy limo and a 1948 Caddy hearse). Anyway, apparently John was hitting on some guy's date and shit happened, we had to leave early. I don't know, I was playing the drums and singing.
