Jordan Chataika (1939-1990) was a Zimbabwean musician from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. In 1960 he got a job as petrol attendant at Kamfinsa. He taught a work colleague how to play a guitar. Impressed, that fella’s dad bought Jordan a new guitar. In 1961, Jordan met Safirio Madzikatire and recorded his first single. Together with his sisters Molly and Edinah Chataika, they formed the The Highway-Stars in the 1970s, but later disbanded the group. In 1990, Jordan tragically died of cancer on the legs.
Links to Peel[]
Peel first became aware of Jordan Chataika in early 1989 when he received a copy of his single, 'Ndawana Shamwari', which became one of his favourite songs in that year. He would often play tracks from the artist on his shows in the late 80's and early 90's. Although he played other tracks from the singer, 'Ndawana Shamwari', was the one that he would play often on his programmes.
