Five-piece Kajagoogoo, 1983

Kajagoogoo were a British pop band hailing from Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. Initially formed under the name of Art Nouveau, they rose to fame with their debut single "Too Shy" produced by Nick Rhodes of Duran Duran. After two further hits and Top 5 album White Feathers, lead singer Limahl (real name Christopher Hamill) left the band to pursue a solo career. Kajagoogoo were less successful after that although still managed to go Top 10 in the UK with "Big Apple" in September 1983. The group split up in December 1985 after releasing a final album under the name of Kaja. The band have reunited at various times since 2003 and in June 2011 released "Death Defying Headlines", their first new single as a five-piece band since 1983.

Links to Peel[]

Peel allegedly played their first independent single "Fear Machine" when they were still known as Art Nouveau, although there is no recorded evidence of this.[1] His only brush with Kajagoogoo's music seems to be when presenting the band on Top of the Pops in February 1983. After the band's actual performance, he managed to treat them with some disdain during the chart countdown commenting: "At No.5, “Too Shy”, Kajagoogoo. We’ve already seen these little blighters. I mean enough’s enough ,eh?". However, a copy of the band's debut album White Feathers found its way into the Record Collection. Peel was presenter on the show for Limahl's only performance of his 1983 hit single "Only For Love".
