John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

The King

James "The King" Brown (born 1968) is a Belfast-born Elvis Presley tribute act known for his covers of songs done in the style of Elvis. In the vein of "songs that Elvis should have done," Brown often performs songs by other artists such as "Whole Lotta Rosie", originally by AC/DC, and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", originally by Queen. Initially a career Belfast postman, Brown became a singer after the positive reaction he received performing "Suspicious Minds" and "The Wonder of You" at a bar in Belfast, and attracting the attention of local singer-songwriter, record producer & former Energy Orchard frontman Bap Kennedy. Brown describes himself as a lifelong Elvis fan and claims that rather than impersonating Elvis, his singing voice naturally sounds-alike.

Peel was a fan of the singer's impression of Elvis between 1997 and 1998. He played many of The King's cover versions on his shows and mentioned on his 27 November 1997 (BFBS) show that he was 'supposed to be doing a gig with them before the year is over. A sort of freakshow, if you like.'

In 1998, Peel invited the King as well as other artists to perform at the London's Southbank for Meltdown, which he was curating.

By the time the 00's came, and the King released the Return To Splendor album in 2000, Peel moved onto other artists and never played anymore of The King's new records.
