King Of The Slums

King of the Slums was a British indie band. Formed in Greater Manchester in the mid-1980s, the band specialised in a kind of electric violin and guitar-driven rock music, and released their debut single in 1986. Whilst the band earned some critical acclaim from the UK music press, commercial success eluded them and the group disbanded in the early 1990s following the release of their second studio album, Blowzy Weirdos (1991). An album of new material plus some older songs appeared in 2009 credited to both King of the Slums and Slum Cathedral User, which was the original name of the group. Two more albums followed, Manco Diablo (2017) and Artgod Dogs (2018).

In November 2021, singer Charlie Keigher tragically died after a long battle with ill health.

Links to Peel[]

Peel seemed to have discovered the group in 1987 when the band released a single as well as a share 7" flexi disc with a band called Moist. Further material were played by Peel and he invited the band to do a session for his show in 1988, where they performed four tracks. By the time the band released their 1991 album, Blowzy Weirdos, Peel had lost interest in them and moved onto other artists. No tracks from that album, apart from the single, Joy, were played by Peel on his shows.
