John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Digital Mystikz's Mala on Kode 9 & Daddi Gee's 'Sign of the Dub'

Peel was an early radio supporter of Kode9, giving airtime in the last year of his life to a promo 10” of debut single “Sign Of The Dub”, co-credited to vocalist Daddi Gee (aka The Spaceape, Stephen Samuel Gordon), the historic first release on the influential Hyperdub label, which became an important hub for dubstep and related music, including subsequent Festive 50 artist Burial. On 12 October 2004, the first show of Peel’s final week of Radio One programmes, there was a chat room competition to win copies of the 10”. The lead track, a moodily atmospheric cover version of “Sign Of The Times” by Prince, would later appear as "Sine" on Kode9's debut album (with Spaceape), "Memories Of The Future" (2006).

In 2014, Mala of Digital Mystikz selected the original 10" for a record box he picked from John Peel’s Record Collection as part of a series for JohnPeelArchive. In a related video, he describes the release as “both hugely influential and inspirational, not just in this type of music but I think in general”.
