Live Report, originally called Midnight Blue, were composed of Ray Caruana, John Beeby, Brian Hodgson, Maggie Jay and Peter May. They were finalists in the BBC's A Song For Europe contest in 1989 with the song, "Why Do I Always Get It Wrong". It scored 111,996 votes, compared to runner-up Julie C's 51,449 votes. Live Report went on to represent the UK in the 1989 Eurovision Song Contest in Lausanne, Switzerland, where they finished second to the Yugoslav entry, "Rock Me" performed by Riva. "Why Do I Always Get It Wrong" spent one week in the UK Singles Chart at #73 in May 1989. Since drummer Peter May was requested to play with Cliff Richard in a concert tour, he was replaced by Richard Marcangelo. Ray Caruana participated in the Maltese heat of the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest, and came second with "Scarlet Song".

On 08 May 1989, Peel mentioned Live Report's "Why Do I Always Get It Wrong" as the record he liked most from the Eurovision Song Contest for many years:
"And I make no apologies at all for playing this next record. The best record, the best song and certainly the best performance featured in the Eurovision Song Contest for years and years and years - and it only came second. I was outraged."
Peel also mentioned on the 2003 A Song For Europe that he and his wife the Pig were able to sing along to the song.

I mean, I really look forward to it each year, because it does have a kind of innocence and charm to it and things which you don't often get these days, and also the record industry doesn't seem to be terrifically interested in it. And I said rather cynically over the past week that this was perhaps because it as impossible to kind of rig the results in any way, but that's probably not a very discrete thing to say. But at the same time, I was very disappointed that the results went the way they did. I really did think that Live Report should have won it… And I drove down to Lausanne for the event and there will be a report on it at 7.30 on Wednesday evening on Radio One that Mike Hawkes and myself have put together over the weekend.")
