Lou Reed

Lewis Allan "Lou" Reed (March 2, 1942 – October 27, 2013) was an American musician, singer and songwriter. After serving as guitarist, vocalist, and principal songwriter of the Velvet Underground, his solo career spanned several decades. After his departure from the group, Reed began a solo career in 1972. He had a hit the following year with "Walk on the Wild Side", but subsequently lacked the mainstream commercial success its chart status seemed to indicate. Reed was known for his distinctive deadpan voice, poetic lyrics and for pioneering and coining the term ostrich guitar tuning.

Links To Peel[]

Peel initially had an interest in Lou Reed's career after he left Velvet Underground, but by the 1980's, he had lost interest in his music. So critical was Peel of Lou's solo music career that on his show from 29 September 1995 after Hole did a cover of the Velvet Underground's 'Pale Blue Eyes', Peel humorously mentioned:

"That's Courtney Love giving a Lou Reed song a good thrashing. Pity she can't do the same thing for Lou, really."

On 09 March 1999 and 23 May 2000, Peel played tracks by the Jades, who had included a teenage Reed at the time of recording.[1]
