John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

The Loves

The Loves were a heavily 1960s influenced pop band, formed in 2000 in Cardiff, Wales. Their debut album Love was released on Track and Field Records in 2004, but attracted generally hostile press coverage, and was commercially unsuccessful. Recorded mostly by Simon Love (brother of Helen Love) alone, their second album Technicolour was released in 2007 on Fortuna Pop. The band recorded four Peel sessions between 2001 and 2002: three in Maida Vale and one at Peel Acres (on Valentine's Day 2002), before splitting up in 2011.

John Peel was a fan (3 sessions and a live Peel Acres appearance in 2 years) of the band and in an interview with Sounds XP, Simon Love revealed he was stressed when doing the sessions:

"That was weird because I get really bad stress headaches. If I get stressed, I’m tense all day, and when it goes well I collapse and get massive migraines. I had one after the first live one, and I had one driving back from his house. But that might have been because the driver was swigging vodka and apparently doing coke in the service station toilets. And he gave some to our drummer and I wondered why Dave was stood up the entire way, just punching the air! They were good but really nerve wracking. When I listen back to them now, we just sound like we’re about to cry or something." [1]

In 2017 Simon Love contributed to the radio documentary, John Peel's Welsh Sessions, where he talked about his 2002 Peel session.
