John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Madder Rose

Madder Rose was a New York City-based alternative rock band who recorded in the 1990s. After a 20 year hiatus, a new album was released in September 2019. The band was fronted by Mary Lorson, who shared songwriting duties with guitarist Billy Coté. The two singer/songwriters continued their collaboration after Madder Rose disbanded, Coté as guest producer on Lorson's three discs with Saint Low, Lorson as guest vocalist on Coté's Jazz Cannon disc. Lorson and Coté have also created the original scores to several films, notably HBO's documentary of Sally Mann, and in 2008 released a disc with Kathy Ziegler as The Piano Creeps. The name Madder Rose came from the herb-based paint rose madder. Many of their songs were featured in major feature films, and television shows. The band released three albums on Atlantic Records, and one on Cooking Vinyl, before breaking up in 1999.

John Peel's Interview - Madder Rose

Peel first got hold of the band's single in early 1993 and mentioned that their self titled track, Madder Rose, was particularly beautiful and something rather quieter, when covering for Jakki Brambles. He also praised their set when interviewing the band after their performance at the Reading Festival on his 28 August 1993 show.

The band did two sessions for his show between 1993 and 1994. However, the group's later albums didn't appeal to Peel that much, when at the 1994 Festive Fifty, he described their Panic On track from their second album as 'I think, the first Festive Fifty entry for this year anyway that I don't remember ever playing on the radio at all on these programmes.'
