John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Mighty Lemon Drops

The Mighty Lemon Drops were an English indie band active from 1985 to 1992. Originally called the Sherbet Monsters, the quartet first formed in the spring of 1985 in Wolverhampton, in The Black Country. Paul Marsh, Dave Newton and Tony Linehan had played together in a band called Active Restraint in 1982, with Newton later leaving to become a founding member of the Wild Flowers. Dave Newton and Tony Linehan were the principal songwriters for the group. Their sound can best be described as a more psychedelia-influenced post-punk, played with a ringing Rickenbacker guitar as the lead instrument. They drew comparisons to Echo and the Bunnymen, who were also influenced by psychedelia.

Links to Peel[]

Peel played a track from Active Restraint (a pre-Mighty Lemon Drops band) on his show in 1982 and when three of them (Paul Marsh, Dave Newton and Tony Linehan) left to form the Mighty Lemon Drops, he continued his interest in this group by playing their debut single, Like An Angel, in December 1985. The track later entered the 1986 Festive Fifty and a session by the band was broadcast in that year. However, by the end of the 80's, Peel had lost interest in the band and moved on to other artists.
