John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Nought

Nøught (also known as Nought) is an instrumental band from Oxford, England, helmed by guitarist James Sedwards. The group began life in the nineties with Alex Pickard (drums), Heini Lonergan-White (bass), Alex Ward (saxophone, keys, guitar) and Sedwards leading. In 1997, the band joined the fledgling indie label Shifty Disco and released their debut EP, 'Red Rag'.

Over the next few years, Sedwards would refine the band's sound, replacing Pickard with Johnny Mitchell and White with Santiago Horro in '99, releasing a full, eponymous album in 2000. In '05, Luke Barlow settled into the role of Nought's keyboard player to this day but the band has not yet released another album (although Shifty Disco frequently places their songs on compilations). However, they tour frequently around South England, and have developed a healthy following as they continue to expand their live shows.

Sounds of the Suburbs 1999 - John Peel meets James Sedwards

Peel came across the band in 1997, when they performed in Oxford [1]. Later on he was invited by guitarist James Sedwards to see him perform with a range of guitars and instruments at his apartment. This was shown on Sounds Of The Suburbs: Oxford programme, broadcast in 1999, where Peel described Sedwards as the first person he had been jealous of anyone who wasn't a footballer.

In an interview with James Sedwards for the Nightshift publication in October 2000, he was asked how important was it to have Peel as an influential fan:

"It's not important to have influential fans but we always hoped that John Peel would respect our music. Our involvement with him started with us recording a session for his show. After that he came to my house to do filming for Sounds Of The Suburbs and we got on well so he invited us to play at the Meltdown Festival. I also did a solo guitar performance at a seminar he was giving in Newcastle. We have just recorded another session for him." [2]

The band did two sessions for Peel's show, but after 2000, they never released any new material on records.
