John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Neil Landstrumm (real name: Neil MacPherson Sutherland) is a Scottish electronic music producer and DJ, who initially started making techno music in the 90's and then later experimented with various genres of electronic music including dubstep. Throughout the '90s and early 2000s, Landstrumm released several albums and EPs for classic techno labels Peacefrog and Tresor, including 1995's Brown by August, 1997's Bedrooms and Cities, and 2001's She Took a Bullet Meant for Me. His late-'00s releases on Planet Mu, such as 2009's Bambaataa Eats His Breakfast, leaned closer to dubstep and experimental hip-hop. During the 2010s, he released the full-length Dragon Under on Sneaker Social Club, as well as dozens of techno, electro, and acid EPs on labels such as Central Processing Unit and Unknown to the Unknown.

Peel was one of Neil Landstrumm influences in terms of making music. In an 2016 interview with Attack Magazine, Neil mentioned JP introducing dubstep to him via his show:

"I was a bit bored with the way techno had ended up. It had become very stale and limited in its ideas. Then in the early 2000s John Peel started playing Jon E Cash and all this eight-bar and sublow – it wasn’t even called dubstep then – and I was just like, ‘Wow, this sounds like the early Sheffield stuff’. I felt that what I could do was fuse that with my passion for British rave. That was the first album on Planet Mu." [1]

Neil also mentioned Peel's name on his Bandcamp website [2], where the Scottish DJ covered the Visitors' Electric Heat track and referred to JP financing some of the band's recording and giving them a session for his show.
