John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Oil Seed Rape

Oil Seed Rape was founded by Wayne Travis, who formed the alternative rock band as a one-man home-recording project in Gloucestershire. Travis started selling a demo tape in local record stores, and expanded the group's lineup to a trio. Line up at this time was:

  • Wayne Travis
  • Daniel Mulligan
  • Christopher Allen - guitar

Oil Seed Rape moved to Norwich in 1992, where they played their first live gigs, and then moved to London in 1993. There they recorded a session for John Peel, and released the Paid EP on Jackass. The EP made the U.K. indie singles charts and paved the way for their only full-length, 6 Steps to Womanhood, issued later in 1993. Several band members were replaced, and ex-Terminal Cheesecake drummer Simon Doling joined. The group remained active until 1995, after which Travis returned to his one-man-band roots and eventually resurfaced as Action.

Peel discovered the band in 1993 and liked it to the extent of giving the band an opportunity to do a session for his programme in February 1993. Further material from the group was played by the DJ on his programmes including adding their track, 'Rib Doner' to the Peel Out In The States series.
