The city is home to the University of Oxford, the oldest university in the English-speaking world; it has buildings in every style of English architecture since late Anglo-Saxon. Oxford's industries include motor manufacturing, education, publishing, science, and information technologies.
Founded in the 8th century, it was granted city status in 1542. The city is located at the confluence of the rivers Thames (locally known as the Isis) and Cherwell. It had a population of 166,034 in 2024. It is 56 miles (90 km) north-west of London, 64 miles (103 km) south-east of Birmingham and 61 miles (98 km) north-east of Bristol.
Links to Peel[]
Sound City, Oxford. 1997
Peel played many artists from Oxford on his radio programmes, including sessions they recorded for his shows.
In the 1960s and '70s, Oxford did not develop a musical style similar to the avant-garde rock of the rival university city of Cambridge, but a number of artists who Peel knew were educated at Oxford University, including Paul Jones, Jonathan King and session favourite June Tabor.
In 1997, Peel and Steve Lamacq co-hosted programmes from Oxford as part of Sound City.
In the late 90's, Peel visited Oxford as part of the TV documentary series, Sounds Of The Suburbs, where in the Sounds Of The Suburbs: Oxford episode, he claimed that he was invited for dinner at the university and met people like the Bishop Of Durham. He also mentioned that his son, Tom Ravenscroft, got turned down by Oxford Brookes University to study there. In the same programme, he also visited musicians from the city, who got airplay on his shows.
Peel played many artists that were signed to Oxford based label Shifty Disco on his radio programmes between the 90's and 00's.
