(Arabic: فلسطين‎ Filasṭīn), officially the State of Palestine (Arabic: دولة فلسطين‎ Dawlat Filasṭīn), is a de jure sovereign state in the Middle East comprising currently of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The latter is currently controlled by Hamas (an organisation that is alligned to the Muslim Brotherhood) and the former by the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organisation, a secularist group), which controls a small amount of the West Bank, whilst the rest is controlled by Israel. The State of Palestine is recognized by 136 UN members and since 2012 has a status of a non-member observer state in the United Nations – which amounts to a de facto, or implicit, recognition of statehood. It is a member of the Arab League, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, G77, and the International Olympic Committee.

Peel played tracks from the Palestine - Music Of The Intifada compilation album on his shows in 1989, which raised awareness of the Palestinians fight against the Israelis. He did not express his opinions on the subject when playing the songs from the Palestine album on the radio, but did came close to publicly discussing the Palestinians when he interviewed Robert Wyatt on Sounds Of The Suburbs: Humberside, where Wyatt described his reaction to local authority ambitions in removing homes in his neighbourhood and converting them to a caravan park as 'Palestinians huddling in the West Bank waiting to be moved out.'
