John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

(This page is about the American saxophonist player. For the British artist of the same name, see Paul Williams(2)).
Paul Williams Sax

Paul "Hucklebuck" Williams (July 13, 1915 – September 14, 2002) was an American jazz and blues saxophonist, bandleader, and songwriter. His record "The Huckle-Buck", recorded in December 1948, was one of the most successful R&B records of the time. In his Honkers and Shouters, Arnold Shaw credited Williams as one of the first to employ the honking tenor saxophone solo that became the hallmark of rhythm and blues and rock and roll in the 1950s and early 1960s.

In his youth, Peel was a fan of the "honking saxophone" style mentioned above, although, as he mentioned in Margrave Of The Marshes, the jazz club at Shrewsbury School didn't share his enthusiasm for it when he played them an Earl Bostic record. He also played some tracks from Paul Williams on his shows in the 80's and 90's, notably "Back Bender", which appeared at least three times in show playlists.

After the 90's, there's no evidence that the DJ played any more records by Paul Williams on his radio programmes, However, as Williams went on to have a long career as a musical director and session musician, working with the likes of James Brown, Elmore James and Otis Redding, as well as being a member of Atlantic Records' house band, Peel may well have played tracks by other artists on which the saxophonist was present. Among the many cover versions of Paul Williams' best-known tune, "The Huckle-Buck", one, by Coast To Coast, was a UK Top 5 single in 1981, although JP doesn't seem to have played it.
