John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Personal Column

Personal Column were a Liverpool indie band, functioning from 1980-1986, based around the songwriting of Marc Vormawah and Colin Brown. Big favourites of John Peel, they did three sessions for his show, as well as sessions for Kid Jensen and Simon Bates.

Peel had members of the band in as guests on his first show during Radio 1's Merseyside Week on 14 March 1983, when he gave a repeat play of their first session. An impromptu 'John Peel Lookalike' contest, hosted by The Laird, was also put together during the show, the contestants being John Ravenscroft and Personal Column's Colin Brown. From the results of the studio clapometer, Brown was declared winner.

In an interview with Marc Vormawah for the Liverpool Noise in 2019, he was asked what were his high points and low points in his music career:

"High points for me were meeting John Peel and recording with Arif Mardin both of whom were part of my musical education when I was a mere 16 years old. The low points are actually few and far between. The music business is exactly that…a business. Talent is a very small part of the equation. I always think of it as trying to win The Lottery…all six numbers have to come up…plus the bonus ball I keep getting 3 numbers! One thing I’m most proud of is after all these years the pleasure of writing a new song that I’m proud of hasn’t diminished or been tarnished by my involvement in the business side of things." [1]

Despite doing three sessions for Peel, the group never released an album during their time, just only three singles between 1982 and 1984.
