Polkacide was a band based in the San Francisco Bay Area that played "punk polka". Founded in 1985 by Ward Abronski, the band released in 1986 their debut album, Polkacide. After 32 years together, they played a farewell concert in San Francisco on 8 October 2017, entitled "The Last Polka".
Links to Peel[]
Peel discovered the band in the mid 80's and played some tracks from the group's debut album on his radio shows in 1987. He even revisited the group in 1997, when a listener requested a track from the group to be played on his radio programme, which he did. However, he mentioned that when it was first released in 1986, he found it fabulous, but was not sure now.
While sitting in for Andy Kershaw on his 8th January 1987 show, Peel mentioned that he tried to convince his listeners on his own show that polka will be big in 1987, but wasn't entirely convinced and then decided to play a track from the group, who mixed polka and punk.
