Premi is a Southall-based bhangra band originally founded by singer/poet Johal Premi in 1981 with toombi player and poet Pali Cheema. The band recorded their first album Chhammak Jehi Mutiar Da in 1983. The group's songs, Tina O Tina, Giddha Pa Nikkiey and Nachdi di Gooth Khulgaye are still enjoyed on some British South Asian wedding dance floors.

Peel first played Premi in the summer of 1987 along with some other Bhangra artists, that he discovered during that year.
In an article on The Observer, published on 28th June 1987 and available in the Olivetti Chronicles, he mentions being impressed by Premi's performance at the ICA, where he described their gig as a blinder, establishing such a storm of rhythm around the heartbeat of the dholak drum that I yearn to hear them produced by the visionary Adrian Sherwood.
On his 26 October 1987 show, he regales attending an award ceremony where he presented a platinum disc to Premi.
The group recorded a session for Peel's programme in August 1987 and their records were played by the DJ until the end of 1988.
