Que Bono were an English New Wave band from Lancashire, featuring Simon Hall (bass), Pete Mulvihill (drums), Alan Maskell (guitar) and Jane Devine (vocals). Their only self financed single was incorrectly pressed in 1981 and after 6 months later, guitarist Alan Maskell left and the band split up.
Links to Peel[]
Ken Garner in his book In Session Tonight (page 125) spoke to guitarist Alan Maskell on how the band got Peel's attention and then a session:
‘Our singer, Jane, had the idea to send our demo tape to Kenny Dalglish, Peel’s hero at Liverpool FC, asking him to forward it to Peel, endorsing our request for a session,’ says guitarist Alan Maskell. Dalglish did so. ‘We got a phone call from Peel, saying, for sheer cheek, could we do a session?” The recording itself, at Langham 1 on Tuesday 9 June, was beset by difficulties, 'We couldn’t put certain things through certain channels, because they didn’t work,', says Maskell. ‘Even though this studio is only due to be used for a few more weeks, the monitors have deteriorated beyond all hope,' despairing producer Dale Griffin scribbled on the session sheet. Nevertheless, the session, broadcast on the 16th, was ‘a highlight of the band's career’, says Maskell: ‘our later self-financed single was incorrectly pressed; six months later we had a blazing row, I left; and the band split soon after.'
