Peelgramophone

Peel's vintage horn gramophone was among the items auctioned.

On 14 June 2022, a limited number of rare records and memorabilia items from John Peel's Record Collection were auctioned at Bonhams, London, on behalf of Peel's family. A statement from the family said:

“In going through the accumulation of 40 years of pop music moments, we decided that some of the most interesting items might find a home, with fans of his programme or of the artists whose music he played. Bonhams have assisted us to carefully select what is being offered for sale, and we hope these items find the attention and appreciation that we’re sure John/Dad would feel they warranted. We had no desire to split up his beloved record collection but have included in the sale a selection of particularly rare or unique records that do not take away from the integrity of his archive.”[1]

The 200 lots went under the hammer for a total of £465,783, with 90% sold by lot and 97% sold by value. The top lot was a test pressing of the single 'Anarchy In The UK / I Wanna Be Me' by The Sex Pistols, which sold for £20,400 against a pre-sale estimate of £6,000 - 8,000.[2]

Items from the auction are listed below, reordered by category and by artist/subject (alphabetically, then chronologically), with further details via numbered links to the Bonhams online catalogue.
