John Peel Wiki

Changes to the look of John Peel Wiki will take place in the near future due to a new skin being rolled out over Oct/Nov across Wikia. Please see the Wikia Staff Blog for further details. On this site, the changes will affect the navigation from the left menu, as well as introduce a fixed page width with narrower content space. Please be patient while adjustments are made for the switch to the new system.

UPDATE: As the change is now in force for some users, I have switched the navigation to the simplified one for the new system. Please check Navigation in the Help section if you can't find things. I also initially made small adjustments to the front page layout, but have now reverted to the old look until all users are on the new system.

COUNTDOWN: Just a reminder for people still using Monaco that the final switch to the new skin is due on Nov. 3. After that, it will no longer be offered as an option. Sorry. Nothing to do with me.

Rephlex Records was a record label launched in 1991 in Cornwall by electronic musician Richard D. James (aka Aphex Twin, etc) and Grant Wilson-Claridge. The label coined the term "braindance" to describe output of Aphex Twin and fellow artists.

Rephlex has released the music of many notable and influential electronic artists, among them Mike Paradinas (aka μ-Ziq, etc), the founder of Planet Mu Records, synth pop revivalist and electro pioneer Ed Upton, prolific dance musician Luke Vibert (aka, Wagon Christ, etc), and electronic musician and virtuoso bass player Squarepusher. The label has also remastered and re-released the early works of its acid heroes 808 State and Future Sound Of London (as Humanoid), and relaunched the career of electronic duo producers Black Devil with a re-release of their first record.

In 2014, James announced the closing of Rephlex Records.

John Peel's Sounds of the Suburbs - Cornwall (1 2)

JP with Richard D. James and Luke Vibert, from 2.07

In 1999, when Peel met up with Rephlex label co-founder Richard D. James (aka Aphex Twin, etc) and fellow label artist Luke Vibert (aka, Wagon Christ, etc) in Sounds Of The Suburbs: Cornwall, the DJ suggested:

“Cornwall’s musicians rarely get a hearing nationally so the Aphex Twin’s success, together with the Rephlex label he’s set up, has inspired a new generation.”

Rephlex quickly moved beyond its Cornish origins and the music of Aphex Twin to encompass a wide range of other electronic musicians featured by Peel, including early releases by session artists μ-Ziq and Squarepusher (as Chaos A.D.). With members of its roster also recording for Warp and other labels, Rephlex releases given airtime by the DJ also included work by familiar faces under assorted aliases, such as Caustic Window (aka Aphex Twin) and Amen Andrews (aka Wagon Christ).

On the BBC website, Rephlex featured as Peel’s Label Of The Month in November 2003 [1], while monthly Peel's Record Box picks included singles and albums by Ovuca, Yee-King, Kosmik Kommando and PP Roy, as well as the various artists "Grime" collection.
