Robson Banda and the New Black Eagles were a Zimbabwean group formed in 1980 and built up a discography of eight albums. Born in Petauke, in eastern Zambia, Banda moved to Zimbabwe as a teenager and there he played guitar with Thomas Mapfumo’s short-lived Acid Band, and joined Jonah Moyo And Devera Ngwena Jazz Band before assembling the New Black Eagles in 1980. The group would release eight albums, and Banda was still recording music until his death in 1998.
Links to Peel[]
Peel as a fan of Zimbabwean music would often play its tunes on his radio programmes during the 80's and 90's, especially artists such as the Bhundu Boys and many others. He also visited the country in the spring of 1988 where he received more Zimbabwean records.
Robson Banda & The New Black Eagles were one of those groups that Peel played on his shows. However, after 1993, Peel rarely played much of Robson Banda's music and by the time the 00's came, Zimbabwean music was rarely played on his shows.
